ESF-Research Conference Series on Industrial Biotechnology Comes to Bielefeld

A new conference series comprising nine meetings has been granted to three professors from Bielefeld University. These European Science Foundation Research Conferences will bring together experts and young scientists to discuss research in different areas of industrial biotechnology.

Prof. Dr. Alfred Pühler, Prof. Dr. Thomas Noll and Prof. Dr. Olaf Kruse, all from the Center for Biotechnology (CeBiTec), and members of the CLIB-Graduate Cluster Faculty, conceived this series, which will cover topics from microbial technologies, cell culture technologies and sun-to-fuel technologies. The series is planned as a cycle of 3 x 3 conferences and will run from 2010 to 2018 at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) of Bielefeld University.

A. Pühler invites members of the CLIB-Graduate Cluster Industrial Biotechnology: “Since the first ESF Research Conference held from November 22-25, 2010 in Bielefeld is dedicated to “Microbes and Industrial Biotechnology” the PhD students of the Graduate cluster have the opportunity to be informed on the most recent industrial projects in Biotechnology.”

Projected titles of the conference series 2010 - 2018:

1. Microbial Technologies

2010 - Microbes and Industrial Biotechnology

2013 - Genome-based Systems Biology of Industrial Microorganisms

2016 - Metabolic and Process Engineering for Industrial Biotechnology

2. Cell Culture Technologies

2011 - Modern Approaches for Bioprocess and Medium Development

2014 - Cell-line Development and Vector Engineering

2017 - Bioreactors and Bioprocesses for Tissue Engineering and Stem Cell Research

3. Sun to Fuel Technologies

2012 - Microorganisms for Bio-Fuel Production from Sunlight

2015 - The Artificial Leaf for Industrial Energy Production

2018 - New Generation Sun Fuel Technologies

ESF Research Conferences are sponsored by the European Science Foundation in a variety of scientific areas. They are attended by up to 150 scientists and encourage speakers to present their latest results and ideas. The aim is to bring together leading scientists and young researchers for discussions on the latest topics in their field of research.

The Center for Biotechnology (CeBiTec) is a central scientific institution at Bielefeld University dedicated to interdisciplinary research in life sciences. It is a place to encourage and support the creation of innovative projects that cross discipline boundaries. For this purpose it consolidates research activities of high international reputation in the fields of biotechnology, molecular biology, genome research, systems biology, biochemistry, nano- and bio-physics, as well as bioinformatics and computer science.

The Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) is an Institute for Advanced Study at Bielefeld University and hosts international research groups as well as science meetings at its own conference centre.
