Research interests

The group is interested in the biology and genomics of bacterial plasmids. Several antibiotic resistance plasmids were isolated from bacteria residing in wastewater treatment plants and analysed on the genomic as well as on the functional level. Moreover, the microarray technology was applied to detect antibiotic resistance determinants in sewage bacteria. A new research topic targets the plasmid metagenome from bacteria of wastewater treatment plants by means of the high-throughput 454-sequencing technology.

A second topic concentrates on the investigation of accessory plasmids identified in the symbiotic, nitrogen-fixing bacterium Sinorhizobium meliloti. Here, the group is interested in the genomic structure, function and the ecological impact of these plasmids.

Quite recently, a project dealing with the metagenome of biogas-producing microbial communities was started. First metagenome sequence data were obtained for a community from an agricultural biogas production plant. Currently, these data are analysed by means of bioinformatics tools.
