Towards a platform organism for terpenoid production – in silico analysis of metabolic networks of potential hosts and in vivo validation

The use of a microbial platform organism for the biosynthesis of plant terpenoids offers the possibility of industrial production of rare compounds. In this study, E. coli and S. cerevisiae are analyzed in silico regarding their potential to supply isopentenylpyrophosphate (IPP), the common terpenoid precursor by means of Elementary Flux Mode Analysis. The theoretical max. IPP yield will be calculated, gene deletions and gene amplification targets will be identified for the efficient production of IPP and validated in vivo.
