Project overview

Fast photoautotrophic growth, simple genetic engineering strategies, and a broad range of potential products make microalgae interesting organisms for several bio-industrial applications. The aim of my project is to investigate the molecular mechanisms responsible for efficient recombinant protein production from nuclear encoded genes in the model green alga C. reinhardtii to improve expression levels. Of particular interest to this work is the use of enhancer elements, sequence harmonization, and bioactive protein fusions. Furthermore, gene knockdown/knockout options like the CRISPR/CAS9 system will be evaluated for their potential application in advanced metabolic engineering.
