Tetrahydrocannabinol is the main psychotropic ingredient of Cannabis sativa. Its human metabolites are produced by hepatic cytochromes P450 and are of interest in recent medical research. Since the production of human metabolites in a purely chemical way is complex and thus costly, the production of human THC metabolites using recombinant human cytochromes expressed in a bacterial system is attempted. The work also entails optimization of reaction parameters and development towards a feasible production process.
